| With further progress of urbanization, the contradiction between physical environment ofurban historical block and new urban functions along with social life is increasingly apparent. On the one hand, the aging in physical and functional aspects of the historical block is leadingto the disintegration of its original structure and modality, which results in the rapid transfer, reorganization of its contained social, economic and cultural connotation and, consequently, splits the context of the city; on the other hand, with continuous improvement of materialliving standard, people’s pursuit of a better life from a simple requirement of material wealth, has been gradually moved into high-quality living environment that calls for the return ofcultural traditions. Urban development is a process that urban problems continue to come upand be resolved, it is a metabolic process of alteration and transformation, and we need torecognize this objective law; but we should not make the renovation become a destructibletool of the old city and its inherent social spiritual heritage. Protection of the historic district isa concept which makes urban development balanced, orderly and harmonious, rather than therigid preservation of urban legacy. As an important part of the urban space, boundary space of historical and cultural blockbears a wealth of urban functions. Because of the special nature of the location and functionof the boundary space, it contains not only "cut off" also means "connection". In the processof the old city’s historic preservation, people tend to attach importance to the center part ofthe protected areas, while ignoring its borders. This phenomenon induces the quality of thehistoric district’s boundary space deteriorating, which also makes the historic district andurban external space fragmented, leading to the antipathetic image between new urban areaand the old urban. Therefore, how to make a good use of the historic district’s boundary space, and let it play a better role should be the focus of attention in the transformation of the historicdistrict. In this paper, the study is on the boundary space of historical and cultural block, mainlyfrom the spatial form and urban function, the boundary of historic district is to be recognized, and be explored with mutual characteristics of boundary space also with the motivation of theimpact on boundary space’s status quo. Combined with the actual situation of Guangzhou historical and cultural block, the study is to put forward the idea of activation of the borderspace, and the corresponding countermeasures. Through research I hope to make a deepenknowledge and understanding on the boundary space of historic district, and for future citytransformation design process as a good reference, which evokes the importance of design onthe district boundary space.Article contains a total of five chapters, divided into four parts: the first part of theintroduction describes the purpose and the meaning of this thesis, introduces the meaning andthe significance of historical and cultural block boundary, and defines the scope of the studyfrom space.
