With the development of economy, air pollution is increasingly serious and a variety of pollutants co-exist, for example the air contains a lot of fine particles, sulfate and dust, a new meteorological weather called haze-weather occurs, especially in winter and spring. While many high-voltage electrical equipments are exposed to the air, its external insulation is related to air conditions (including pressure, density, humidity and so on). As a result, it is necessary to research the external insulation of electrical equipments under deteriorating air quality.Pearl River Delta region has been serious pollution areas,. In order to investigate the external insulation of electrical equipments under deteriorating air quality, eight automatic devices designed to monitor temperature, humidity, wind speeds, atmospheric pressure, discharge inception voltage of air gap etc, are installed in different regions in Guangzhou, a typical representative of the Pearl River Delta region.Based on data monitored by the automatic devices, the change rules of air gap discharge inception voltage (AGDIV) and various atmospheric parameters under natural conditions are summarized. The relationship between atmospheric environmental parameters and AGDIV is researched and the main influencing factor on the AGDIV is purchased in this paper. It is shown that the AGDIV decrease when the fluctuation of atmospheric parameters as a whole is big. In addition, air gap breakdown test is carry out in artificial climate chamber to verify the relationship between atmospheric environmental parameters and AGDIV. Furthermore, the surrounding electric field of110KV insulator string is calculated by ANSYS, and the impact of the harsh atmospheric environment on the withstand voltage of insulator string is analyzed. Finally, based on conjoint analysis of influence of temperature and humidity on the AGDIV, the decrease reasons of the AGDIV are studied from electrode electric field distortion and medium dielectric strength. The influence of temperature and humidity on the external insulation of electrical equipments under deteriorating air quality is verified.
