| In the21st century, people are facing a huge challenge of the environmental issues and the limited natural resources. Conventionally, the interior design has been paid attention on the customers’interests in aesthetic, functional, economic and health needs as the design criteria. Consequently, it is inevitable from the challenge of the environmental and limited natural resource facts nowadays. Interior design needs new approaches to cover these challenges. Sustainable development will be one of the best approaches.In this study, I have illustrated green interior design based on sustainable development by investigating principles, methods and experiences of the traditional elements.Sustainable development provides a clear direction and goals for environment-friendly (green) interior design. Based on sustainable development, green interior design can be balanced the relationship between the people and the environment, present and future generations, cultural inheritance and modernization. Green interior design focuses the benefits for human as well as for nature. This means that the design converting from "people-oriented" basis to harmony with nature (other creature). Green interior design covers not only design of physical structures but also include a healthy values and lifestyles for clients, so called "the green living". Green interior design can motivate people one step close to living green.In addition, sustainable interior design should not be ignored the values of inheritance and the local cultural traditions. This inheritance is not a simple antique and retro but recognition and respect for our own culture and the spirit of tradition. We need to integrate the spiritual connotation of the traditional elements into interior design, which can stand out from other ethnic distinct. |
