The technology of Chinese ancient architecture created by Chinese natinon, is regarded as brilliant achievements. It is one of the important symbols of Chinese ancient civilization. After more than5000years of development and evolution, with variety structure and diverse forms, it is rich in scientific and cultural connotation.Based on extensive investigation of construction technique history of Chinese ancient buildings, the structure method, structure developing history and seismic behavior of Chinese ancient timber structure buildings are analyzed in several respects of the structural system and form. This passage mainly takes the Yuhua pavilion as an Example, to analyze seismic performance of timber structure.Yuhua Pavilion, which is located in Beijing Forbidden City Chunhua door, is currently Chinese most complete existing Tantric Buddhist temple.Referring to the drawings and actual measured data, the building of timber structure finite element model is created, with elastic spring elements used to simulate semi-rigid nodes, according to the particularity of Mortise and Tenon Connection and the results of ambient vibration test. By calculation, basic dynamic parameters of Yuhua pavilion are gained, such as vibration modes and the seismic amplification effect on each floor for the following seismic analysis of floating cultural relics. The average of acceleration amplification factor on the top floor is2.7, which should be highly considered. After the summary of previous timber structural experiment data, it is conclusion that allowable value of drift angle of elastic and elastic-plastic is1/200and1/20respectively, then story drift angle is assessed to determine the structural failure condition in frequent earthquake, seismic earthquake and rare earthquake. This is followed by a brief introduction to the floating cultural relics destroyed by Wenchuan earthquake in China. It sums up the researches on seismic response of floating objects, discusses the anti-slidingand overturning criterion, and assess the earthquake response of free-standing objects in Yuhua Pavilion. It simulates seismic response of floating artifacts by the software LS-DYNA, to veriy the analysis methods reliability, then makes a simple analysis on the influence of seismic excitation on object overturn stability and sliding. The results show that:The vertical seismic acceleration affects object sliding response significantly, and under the condition of smaller vertical acceleration peak, the vertical seismic acceleration effect on objects capsizing can be ignored. Because buildings can amplify and filter the seismic waves, then a comparison of floating objects’action is maken. On the premise of ensuring object slip distance, it comes to a dicision that reducing the coefficient of friction between objects can effectively prevent the overturning of the objects.
