As an important component of road network and transportation system, mountainousroads have become more and more important in our society life. Due to the limited naturalconditions, the geometry linear, road grade and traffic conditions of mountainous roads areworse than common roads, as well as the discrete disturber factors are much more. In thiscondition, it is easy to occur traffic accidents if the drivers don’t take enough careless. Therefore, the analysis of traffic safety is particularly important.Car-following theory is based on dynamics theory for analyzing the state offollowing-cars when they are impacted by guiding cars in single-lane road where the carscan’t be surpassed. In this paper, it firstly analyzed the geometry linear factors and the discretedisturber factors impacting its traffic safety based on deeply analyzing the traffic conditions ofmountainous roads. Secondly, though studying on the existing car-following theory, itanalyzed all parameter’s calibration of the models and built a nonlinear car-following modelwhich is suitable for safety analysis of mountainous roads. Finally, it simulated with VISSIMfor the model, which confirms its availability and provides a theoretical reference for thetraffic safety analysis of mountainous roads.During the course of building the model which is suitable for safety analysis ofmountainous roads, this paper insisted on the principle of availability and advancement.Combing with the main characteristics of mountainous road, it analyzed and generalized theexisting research results commendably, which clears the perspective and ensures the keydirection for the follow-up study. The results of this paper would enrich the traffic followtheory and the content of traffic safety analysis of mountainous roads, improve the trafficsafety management of mountainous roads as well as provide a theoretical reference for thetraffic safety analysis of mountainous roads in our country.
