High-rise building is an important symbol of the city’s economic prosperity andsocial progress. People offen linked the skyscrapers with international metropolis such asChicago and New York, indicating that high-rise building society in shaping the image ofthe city has an indelible contribution.From a technical perspective, the advances in modern high-rise buildingconstruction, thanks to the development of mechanical analysis and computingtechnology, also thanks to advances of structural design and construction technology, andthanks to the contribution of mechanical and electronic technology.The design of high-rise buildings is more complicated than that of low-rise building.On the force characteristics of structure, the lateral loads (wind loads and earthquake) inthe analysis and design of high-rise buildings plays an important role, especially inhigh-rise buildings play a major role. Therefore, high-rise building structural analysis anddesign are more complicated than those of moderate-rise or low-rise buildings.In the paper, the development of high-rise building structure in history, structuralsystems in common use and their character, methods of analysis and the values of lateralload, the basic methods for structure calculation and analysis in lateral loads and theirdevelopment trends are introduced.Study for the structural design of a high-rise building in Guangzhou is carried out,and the key points and difficulties in calculation and analysis are described in the paper,which are the following:(1) Design parameters of the wind loadFor the height of high-rise buildings and the complicated outer surface, the impact ofwind-induced vibration of building and partial pressure parameter to calculate a retainingstructure design are needed to get by wind tunnel tests and wind-induced vibrationcalculations based on the tests.(2) Analysis and design for lateral force structural system The most important issue for design of a high-rise building is selecting theappropriate lateral force structural system. By analyzing and comparing several lateralforce structural systems, a reasonable solution for the project is selected.(3) Performance-based seismic designPerformance-based seismic design is a development trend of seismic design theory,the performance-based seismic design and analysis methods are used for the project,proposed the reasonable seismic performance objectives for the overall structure andcomponents. Through the appropriate calculation and analysis, the target is achievedbetter.(4) Dynamic elasto-plastic analysis of structureThe use of ABAQUS software for the dynamic elastic-plastic analysis of the projectis introduced. By analyzing the results, some reasonable proposals for the structuraldesign are made.
