In the last few decades, the increasing of highway traffic mileage has made the critical situation for highway roadside safety as the high-frequency accidents of vehicle driving-off roads. Therefore, further research on the fault tolerant design of highway roadside environment, which is an effective way to prevent and reduce the vehicle roadside accidents, is needed. Based on the literature review of technological achievements both at home and abroad, three aspects of research has been systemically performed in this paper as:the cause analysis of roadside accident, the assessment of roadside fault tolerant environment and its warming effectand the study of roadside environment setting technologies, which is expecting to be employed for providing theoretical guides on roadside safety design in China.Firstly, based to the data evaluation of highway roadside accident, the analyzing causes for roadside accidents have been completed from three aspects of people, vehicle and environment; and the exploring of relationship between roadside environment and accidentshave been discussed. Consequently, the following outcomes was generated as:the main causes for roadside accidents are human’s unsafe behavior, fatigue driving and speeding, passenger car has the most high frequency of roadside accident, the most possible weather of getting roadside accident is sunshine, the straightness road has the most high chance of roadside accident, reasonable setting of shoulder and roadside rumble strips and roadside barrier can effectively reduce the accident rate and the severity of roadside accidents significantly associate with the roadside terrain.Secondly, reviewing with chapter two (causes analysis of roadside accidents and correlational research of roadside safety), four principles and twenty-four indexes have been selected to build the evaluation index system of roadside fault tolerant environment. Then using ofthe Gray Cluster Method and the Rough Set established the roadside fault tolerant environment evaluation model, and the rationality of the evaluation system build in the paper showed as acceptable by testing examples.Thirdly, the software called ADAMS has been applied to create car dynamic simulation model and three types of road spectrum models as: cutting type, ceramic spike type and thermal melting type. Then various projects with different setting values of roadside stripssizes have been testing in ADAMS. According to the outcomes of testing simulation models, three types of suggested values for rumble strips’details have been gained, which might provide the reference basis for the design of roadside rumble strips. Finally, the roadside fault-tolerent environment has been divided into two zones as key fault-tolernt zone and perihery fault-tolernt zone, and the scale of quantitative calculation for theses two zones also have been discussed. Based on above, the effective techniques for improving fault-tolerent environment have been raised in the paper.
