Earthquake Early Warning system for Railways is an important subsystem of theoverall planning of Railway informatization. Earthquake disaster is one of the mostdestructive natural disasters which seldom occur. Because the earthquake disaster maysudden occur with no regularity, it is hard to predict when and where it will happen. When the train running speed of200km/h or above, even smaller disasters may cause amajor accident which harm state property and life safety of the passengers. With thesixth overall speed increase of China’s railway and the successful opening ofBeijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, the running speed of the train has reached to350km/h. Some characteristics of the high-speed railway, such as, the operationperformance of the train, and train’s interaction with the environment are big differentwith those normal train. Those difference has put forward new requirements on thesafety of train operation, any disaster could cause a major accident, such as derailmentand outage, even it will causes destructive damage of the train line with resulting infatal car crash. Some developed countries, like Japan, Germany, and France, have alladopt advanced technology for earthquake monitoring, preparing a detailed emergencyplans, and when monitoring equipment detected an earthquake occurs, the system willtimely alarm and control train to stop, in order to minimize the damage. The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway is the longest railway in china with hugeinvestment and high standard. Along the railway, there are four main active seismiczone. Earthquake is the most harmful disaster, we should try as far as possible to reducetrains’ speed or stop the train before the earthquake happened, to ensure the safety oftrain operation. Therefore, Research on a new and efficient Earthquake Early WarningSystem for the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed Railway is urgent needed. This paper has described the necessity of the issue, and the dynamic analysis ofrelated research both at home and abroad. It also introduced the idea andimplementation method of the research. The research work can be mainly concluded as following aspects:1. Analyze on the Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway and the seismic hazard ofits’ regional area;2. Both the overall and the detailed design of Earthquake Early Warning Systemfor the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed Railway;3. The key algorithm research which including two parts: seismic intensityattenuation relationships and seismic alarm mode design, and software design of thesystem is also conducted in the paper. The key findings of the subject:1. The paper first introduced the present situation and the existing problems ofEarthquake Early Warning system for Railways. Based on the investigation ofBeijing-Shanghai high speed railway and the seismic hazard of its’ regional area, it putforward the overall structure and the specific design of Earthquake Early WarningSystem for the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed Railway.2. Detailed design of two main parts of the System-Railways MinistryEarthquake Safety Management and Earthquake Safety Monitoring for Passengertransportation line.3. Focus on the core estimation algorithms of the system, and the softwarestructure have been brought out.It is noteworthy that, according to the provisions of the national "EarthquakeDisaster Mitigation Act”, only the Government have the right to publish theinformation of earthquake prediction. The information of earthquake magnitude inthis system is derived from the authoritative department of the national earthquakemonitoring, therefor, the acquisition of earthquake magnitude does not describe in thepaper.Earthquake Early Warning System designed in this paper, could control the train tostop according to the earthquake monitoring alarm, it can also grasp the layout ofmonitoring points along the railway line and failure state of the equipment in time toimprove its’ accuracy and reliability. At the same time, the system can also conductdata sharing with multiple systems, for example, command and control systems, emergency systems, traffic safety control systems, passenger services system, andmaintenance system, the national earthquake monitoring network monitoring data canalso be used by the system. Such design could improve the level of railwayinformatization.
