Steel structure has many advantages such as light weight, high strength, highindustrialization, rapid construction, environment protection, good seismicperformance, sustainable development etc. Steel structures have been widely used incivil engineering as a result of above advantages. In the steel structures, beam-columnconnection is the key point, whose capability affects the integral responses of theframe on loading directly. During the Northridge Earthquake in1994andHyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake in1995, beam column connections suffered a great dealof damage. So connection performance is very important for steel frames. So somenew beam-column connections have been proposed, These new beam-columnconnections include reduced connections and reinforced connections. In this paper, a new connection is proposed, with adding plates on flanges ofbeams to transfer forces outside rectangle tube column. Traditional failure patternswere changed by adding plates, that is to say connection will be broken at the pointson beam where adding plates are connected. This paper, four specimens under static load were tested, including two traditionalconnections and two new connections. By mean of experiment and finite elementanalysis, the mechanical behavior of the connections is researched. The main scope ofthis paper includes:Through the static destructive experiments of four all-welded connections, twokinds of failure mode, distribution of stresses, ultimate loads, displacements arerecord. Results of tests and results of finite element software ANSYS were compared, toverify the reliability of the finite element software ANSYS.Specimens with traditional connection and two new connections under static loadwere analyzed respectively by the finite element software ANSYS. Distribution ofstresses, ultimate loads were discussed.By analyzing connections with different widths, performances of new connectionsare analysed further. By experiment and finite element analysis, the superior performance of theconnection is got. Further project applications and research of the connections couldbe done based on this dissertation.
