Gear pump is one kind of the most widely used hydraulic pumps, with theadvantages of the small size, simple structure, there is also the pressure fluctuationproblem and the noise shortcoming. In this paper, we focus on the need of the noisedecrease for the gear pump. The gear pump noise mainly includes three parts, the radiated noise generatedby the gear toothing, the noise generated by fluid pressure pulsation and noise byexternal incentives. In order to control the radiated noise of the gear pump, structural optimization design for the gear pump is implemented. The structure of the paper is as follows. To begin with, we will provide a briefbackground on the gear pump design and several key issues and solutions should benoted. Then the gear pump design is completed, a three-dimension model of thegear pump is built, the force of the gear toothing is calculated. In the second section, in accordance with the requirements of finite elementanalysis, the model details is simplified, meshing, select the material parametersand properties, establish the finite element model, the modal analysis of the gearpump and the frequency domain response calculation based on the modal isimplemented, the vibration characteristics of the gear pump is obtained. In later section, direct boundary element method is used to predict the gearpump outside sound field radiated noise, the sound field contours properties arestudied and the sound pressure curve at a specific field point is extracted whichdetermine the noise frequency range need to be decrease. Finally, the stiffness is set as the constraints, the structure of the gear pump isoptimized in order to limit the radiation noise level of the gear pump within aspecified range and achieve the purpose of noise reduction.
