Although it is undisputable that the art design is uncontrollable, there are refined logical instruction and accurate experimental analysis in every subject. Nowadays, people advocate combining product design with aesthetics. As a new technological method, kansei engineering has become the mainstay between producers and consumers. Meanwhile, it is also leading a new era of rational design with the rigorous researching method of natural science. Currently, researches on the application of kansei engineering in China are still at the exploratory stage. The kansei engineering is just applied to the industrial design, while its development in art design still exists at the initial stage, which leaves an enormous gap for improvement. There are many shared parts between the design of public facilities in the art design of public environment and the product design in the industrial design, especially for the design of public health infrastructure in the business district. Kansei engineering advocates designers’subjective feelings to the design element and focuses on the rational analysis on the natural cognition as well as the quantification of feelings toward the design object. The public health infrastructure can mostly embody its interaction and communication with human beings, which also coincides with the earliest academic origin "science of human nature".This thesis firstly analyzes the existing issues on public health infrastructure in urban pedestrian malls at home and does researches and practical analysis on the public health infrastructure abroad. Under the theoretical framework of kansei engineering, it then presents the demonstration on the typical design study, and proposes the evaluation criterion, design principle and method for the perceptual quantified design according to the field survey and quantitative analysis. It also indicates the future developing trend of the public health infrastructure of pedestrian malls in China. Based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of this study, it is hoped that the evaluation system of kansei engineering for public health infrastructure can be established and the kansei engineering design theories and methods suitable to China’s actual conditions can be explored so as to provide the public environment design with optimized construction and foundation.
