To reduce the operating noise and increase the air delivery ofKFRd-35GW/054-E1air-conditioner, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)software ANSYS CFX is employed to analyze the internal flow field of itscross-flow fan (CFF). The effect of the structural parameter modification on theflow field and its performance are explored. Air delivery and noise experiments arecarried out for comparative purpose. The main contents are as follow:(1) Theorigin of the abnormal noise are investigated using the flow field analysis.(2) Theinternal flow field distribution and its performance are inspected under differentvolute throat gap, volute case outline, the blade slope and rotational speed.(3)Theair delivery and noise level of the prototype and its improved counterpart arecompared based on the enthalpy potential method and noise monitor. It shows that:(1) The internal flow field distribution in prototype is improper. Many vortices areformed in the inlet region. These vortices reduce the air intake and generateabnormal noise.(2) The CFD simulation gives the optimal structural parameters ofthe CFF, including volute throat gap (5mm~6mm), outlet diffusive angles (0o~6o)and the blade slope (48.5o).(3) The simulation results are validated by the airdelivery and noise experiments.
