After WWI and WWII, war memorials sprang up all over the world. This type oflandscape architecture is focused on the commemoration of the war and the people whodied in the war. War memorials are usually located in important public spaces in cities,and in the sites where the war took places. There are hundreds of war memorials allover the world which have great influence over people who had suffered from the war.War memorials have become an indispensable part of memorial landscape.60years ago, millions of Chinese Volunteer soldiers involved in the Korean War.They marched to Korea from a small city named Dandong on Chinese border. Threeyears later, after the Chinese army won the war, they come back through the same city.Dandong becomes a famous place because of its close relationship to the war. Last year,the government of Dandong decided to build a memorial park by the side of Yalu Riverdedicating to the Chinese Volunteer Army. This memorial park would grow as thecultural symbol in the city and a war tourism attraction on Yalu River. Tourists willcome to this park to learn the stories of the war and to commemorate soldiers who diedin the war.The first part of the thesis is based on plenty of case study on war memorials allover the world. The author analyzed the reasons behind different forms of warmemorials and found out the regularity of spatial organization in war memorials. Thenthe author took the viewpoints of visitors to separate out three kinds of emotional needthat should be satisfied in war memorials.The second part of the thesis is about the design practice in Chinese VolunteerArmy memorial park. By connecting the bond between war narration and spatialorganization in the park, the author explored a new way to reveal the meaning of warmemorial. At the same time, a sequence of scenes was established as a way for visitorsto meet their emotional needs.The value of the research lies in studying war memorial as a type of landscapearchitecture. The author explored the design method and characteristics of warmemorial by case study and design practice. All this work would complement theknowledge structure in memorial landscape.
