Rotary Drilling Rig is a pile hole equipment. By virtue of the advantages ofhigher efficiency,better quality,less pollution and higher degree automation, ithas so widely used in many large engineering projects and civil engineeringfields that it has taken the main position in pile foundation projects both at homeand abroad. Drilling mast, as the important component for bearing forces, hasplayed a vital role in operation quality and stability of the whole machine.Therefore, it is essential to analyze the mechanical characteristics of drillingmast and to optimize the structural design of ones.This paper introduced the status of research and development of rotarydrilling rig at home and abroad, and studied the structure characteristics andworking principles of the rotary drilling rig and its mast. Accordingly, theinvestigative meanings and content of the thesis were pointed out.Simultaneously,considering the operation characteristics of drilling mast, thispaper found out the typical operating condition, and processed the static analysisof structures and calculated the forces of panel points for drilling mast. The finite element model of the drilling mast was established by the3D modelingsoftware Solidworks and analyzed by the finite element analysis softwareANSYS Workbench. The strength and stiffness of drilling mast was studiedunder the typical operating condition, and the stress and strain of drilling mastwere obtained. In addition, we also found out the weak and excessive areas onthe strength of drilling mast, that could provide reliable information for thefurther optimization and improving of structure. For validating the simulationresults, the test was done. Compared the simulation results with theexperimental ones, the results were identical with each other, and verified thatthe theoretical analysis and the simulated models in this study were effective andpractical. Further, the stability against elastic buckling was studied. The front sixstable coefficients and buckling modes were obtained and the simulation resultsshowed that the stability of drilling mast could be satisfied. The modal analysison drilling mast also was made in the paper. The front six modal frequencies andvibration shapes were obtained. These results were useful to predict the dynamiccharacteristics of the structure and the optimization design.At last, combining the results of finite element analysis, the weight of the drilling mast was taken as objective foundation. A parametric model of drillingmast was built and the parameters of the structure were optimized applying theoptimized module which the ANSYS Workbench provided. Compared theresults of optimization with the ones of the original design, the drilling mastafter optimization is more reasonable and reliable.
