With the implementation of the strategy of west-east electricity transmission project and extra-high voltage transmission project, there will be more and more transmission lines across the valleys, river areas that easily cause power line icing. Power transmission line icing will lead to failures such as wire overweight, wire waving, pole (tower) collapse, which threaten the safe operation of electrical power system. Therefore, real-time monitoring of transmission line icing conditions is particularly important. In this paper, overall plan of power transmission line icing status automatic identification is proposed; software modules of automatic identification of icing are designed. By analyzing the characteristics of on-site transmission lines icing image, this paper focus on the icing automatic identification software algorithm. First, position detection of wires and insulators from acquired images is conducted, the area containing wires and insulators used as the algorithm processing area, and then in this area, images will be handled with preprocessing, segmentation and edge extraction. Finally, icing status is identified and the ice thickness is calculated. In the process of positioning of the wires and insulator, this article analyzes the characteristics of wire and insulators, comes up with positioning detection algorithm using line detection and template matching based on gray values for wires and insulator. Wire and the insulator region will be the main algorithm processing area, thereby the difficulty of subsequent analysis and processing algorithms and system of computation are reduced. This paper, in the process of icing identification and ice thickness calculation, combines the number of pixels of ice around the wires and characteristics of edge changes in the icing conditions for wires and insulators region, utilizes camera calibration method to convert image coordinates to global coordinates system, and calculates the ice thickness by comparing before and after boundary distance around wires and insulators.Test results shows that on-site acquired image of power transmission lines verifies the algorithm can automatically identifies the icing status. Compare between the algorithm results with field measurements of wires and insulator icing thickness error are this:wire icing thickness is less than2mm; insulator ice thickness is less than3mm. It can be seen that the algorithm can identify icing status and calculate the ice thickness of power transmission line. And analysis results truly reflect the on-site icing conditions of power transmission lines.
