Reactor protection system is implemented by safety-criticalInstrument&Control system. The new generation of Instrument&Controlsystem have been using digital technology. Currently,domestic nuclearpower plants are using digital Instrument&Control systems developed byforeign companies. Self-development of digital reactor protection systemis of great significance to our country. As requested by standards, onlyafter been verified and validated could software be used in safety-criticalinstrument&control system. However, standard verification&validationprocess hasn’t been built up in our country recently. In the maintenancephase of reactor protection system development life cycle,verification&validation process is mainly about functional simulation test.Starting from requirements of digital reactor protection systemdevelopment platform, this paper presents a method thatcombineverification&validation in the maintenance phase of reactorprotection system with software reliability analysis, and propose someadvicebased on the results of reliability analysis, which may be helpful tothe improvement and self-development of reactor protection system.The main creative points include the following three,1) Combining software reliability technology with verification&validation is put forward to give some improvement advices in themaintenance phase of safety-critical software, which will meet thestrict standard of verification&validation and ensure the qualityof self-developed digital reactor protection system.2) Fault modes of digital reactor protection system are analyzedbased on practical view. Fault trees and binary decision diagramsof reactor coolant pump’s trip are constructed to carry outqualitative analysis and quantitative calculation of softwarereliability.3) Based on the results, two improvement advices on reactorprotection system are given. The two methods are used in reactorcoolant pump protection system and their improving effectsareverified and compared.
