Relay protection is the first line of defense to maintain the safety and stability of thepower system, and its reliability plays an important role in the development of the powergrid. However, the traditional backup protection based on local information has its owndefectiveness of high difficulties in coordinating operation times and reaches, long actiondelay, and probability of great cascading failure cased by mal-operation. With complexityof operation mode and enlargement scale of power systems, these issues have beenexposed, and confirmed by a mass of blackouts happened in recent years in the world.And that’s why wide-area backup protection system is catching more and more attention,based on the foundation of electronic technique, network service and computertechnique.In recent years, the emerging multi-agent technology has unique advantages indealing with distributed problem solving, so people begin to introduce multi-agenttechnology into wide-area backup protection field, which has already made someachievements. After a massive reading of related articles and on the basis of pioneer’sprevious work, this paper has made a in-depth research focused on three aspects, themulti-agent’s model, the multi-agent simulation system, and the protection algorithm forwide-area backup protection, and achieved some elementary accomplishments.By comparative analysis of the characteristics of the existing three kinds of systemarchitecture for wide-area backup protection, the article puts forward the distributed areasystem structure and the agency model of wide-area backup protection, and also makesdetailed design of multi-agent system on the interface of the EPOCHS platform, whichconstitute a simulation system to test the correctness of wide-area backup protectionalgorithm and the rationality of the designed multi-agent system.Wide-area information collection demands high fault-tolerance for the wide-areaprotection algorithm, so this paper proposes a kind of wide-area direction comparison algorithm with high fault-tolerance based on multi-agent. The algorithm adopts thedistributed structure, through adaptive setting of the action values of the bus backupprotection, and fully consideration of direction information redundancy, so as to ensurequick action of bus and line backup protection under the circumstance of limited agentfailures and disappearance of substation DC power. The feasibility and validity of theproposed algorithm has been verified by EPOCHS simulation platform.
