The task of studying strength theory is very complicated, however, the applications ofstrength theory are widely used. Therefore to choose them as the study content not onlyhave significant theory meanings but also have great value of engineering applicationindeed. Twin-shear unified strength theory is a new system theory about material andstructural strength which was originated from and further developed in China itself. It’s abasic theory that includes mechanical model, mathematical modeling, theoretical formulaand so on. In recent years, a series of papers at home and abroad about applications oftwin-shear unified strength shows its practical feasibility and unique advantages.Based on twin-shear unified strength theory, this paper studied on the theory analysisand the methods of choosing parameter b in loess engineering. The main contents andconclusions in this study are:(1) Study on the methods of choosing the parameter b of twin-shear unified strengththeory in loess engineering.True tri-axial tests on original and remolded loess have beencarried out by using tri-axial apparatus. Drawing limit lines on π-plane of loess withdifferent era, density, water content, the stress state, etc. Then fitting the test data to the limitline of twin-shear strength theory and determining the parameter b value.(2) The change rules of parameter b under different influencing factors were furtheranalysed, it is found that density and the water content are the main factors to effect b value.(3) A loess slope in Xi’an city Chang’an district, for example,twin-shear unifiedstrength theory is applied to its stability analysis, then compared the calculated safetycoefficient F and the parameters b to find out the relations among them. And use the (1),(2)conclusions for the stability analysis of the slope. And the result is compared to discuss thesignificance of the twin-shear unified strength theory in engineering, save a lot ofengineering cost, thus achieved significant economic effect.
