Pressure pipes, as a kind of special material transport equipment, have an application in many other areas, including the long distance transport of petroleum and natural gas. With the rapid development in pipeline transportation, safety problems of pressure pipelines have been highlighted. Many safety accidents bring a wake-up call to pipeline engineering designers. Thus, when we design a pressure pipeline, burst pressure of pipeline, as a key issue, should be taken into consideration. In order to design a pressure pipeline meeting the requirement of strength and efficiency, it's necessary to work out a measure to simplify the procedure of pipeline design. The pipeline safety is related to the national safety and people's harmonious life. This paper firstly summarized the current research situation of pressure pipe both domestic and internationally, and find that many theories can predict the burst pressure only for one or a type of materials. Secondly, the fundamental principle of twin-shear stress yield criterion is introduced in this paper, which was used to calculate the burst pressure of a type of pipeline.Thirdly, by using the unified strength theory, the analytical solution for burst pressure of the pipeline is obtained. It is more accurate than the value deduced by other yield criterion. Finally, we use the finite element software (ABAQUS) to calculate the burst pressure of a sample, compare the simulation value with the test data, and come to a conclusion that it's necessary to improve the accuracy of computer simulation.
