With increasing invest for natural gas field in China, it has been widely used in civilbuildings due to its convenient and efficient roles. However, gas explosion accidents occurredmore frequently than before. Some research has been carried out to study about gas explosionin civil buildings. There are still lack of the knowledge about the characteristics of gasexplosion and its impact on buildings. In this paper, the research aim at the dynamic responseof brick wall subjected to gas explosion load, the main research contents are as follows:(1)The reasons for the civil residential gas explosion was analyzed in this paper, adetailed introduction to the basic mechanism of gas explosion in the building as well asdisaster characteristics were presented. The potential hazards of building structures inducedby gas explosion and the characteristics of the gas explosion parameters were summarized inthis paper.(2)The formula to calculate the gas explosion load has been introduced. The pressurepeak overpressure in a kitchen occurring explosion accident was obtained by useing thesetheoretical formula. Then, the effects of the pressure relief to Gas explosion load werediscussed from two aspects: the pressure relief area and the pressure relief closure. Finally, amechanical model of the gas explosion load and on-site investigation and assessment methodsof blasting accidents were introduced.(3)The blast response of brick masonry wall was simulated based on commercial FEM(finite element method) software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The FEM separate models andhomogenization models of masonry walls were established respectively, The failure modes ofbrick masonry wall subjected to gas explosion were analyzed. Parametric study was carriedout to investigate the effects of the thickness of the wall, the relief area, the ignition position, the vent pressure, gas concentration and boundary constraints on the wall dynamic response. The results were compared with the explosion accident occurred. Through the investigationand analysis in this paper, the protective measures of a gas explosion occurred in the civilconstruction are presented and summarized.
