With the good properties of high temperature stability and eliminating thereflection cracking, the Large-stone Asphalt Mixes (LSM)is adopted to solve theproblems of the inadequate rutting resistance and poor durability to the asphaltpavement. As under layer of asphalt pavement the Large-stone Asphalt Mixes isless researched than base course. Based on researches on Large-stone AsphaltMixes home and abroad, the paper studies the Design Methods of Large-stoneAsphalt Mixes as under layer of asphalt pavement. It includes material designand structural design. The research on optimum design of Large-stone Asphalt Mixes material isbased on a lot of laboratory experiment. The aim of these experiments is to get acomparative study on pavement performance and mechanical properties of theLarge-stone Asphalt Mixes. Firstly, match ratio design is studied separately ontoproposed Dense-graded Large-stone Asphalt Mixes(ATB-30)and Open-gradedLarge Stone Asphalt Mixes (ATPB-30). And then, rutting resistance, moisturestability and mechanical properties will be studied based on laboratory experiment. The structural design methods include that the structure type is assumed andthe height of the base course of LSM is given by mechanical analysis, therequirement of structural layers and the relation of the thickness of AsphaltMixes and nominal maximum aggregate size.
