High temperature superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), whichis made by the principle of superconducting properties, is a kind of shortcircuit current limiter. The resistor type SFCL, which has the advantages ofsimple structure, obvious limiting effect and high speed of current limiting,will be widely used in the future power grid. In this paper, the application ofthe10kV high-Tc resistor type SFCL in Chongming Power Grid is studied.The superconducting and the SFCLs are firstly introduced in thispaper. The structure, principle and working characteristic of the resistor typeSFCL is analyzed in detail. When faults occur in the power grid, the resistortype SFCL can limit the short circuit current through increasing theresistance components in the short-circuit impedance. Then, thecharacteristics of the resistor type SFCL, as well as its influence on powersystem’s stability, relay protection and reclosing has been studied. Thecharacteristics of the Chongming electric power system are the variation ofpower energy’s development, the annoying operation because of the separateoperation mode, being the typical end of the electricity-supply network.Based on the analysis of these characteristics, it is studied not only thefeasible application of the resistor type SFCL in Chongming Power Grid, butalso the problems needed to be solved in the application, such as theadjustment of the electrical wiring, the relay protection’s co-ordinating andthe parameter settings of the SFCL. In the end of the paper, a simulation of10kV resistance type SFCL access10kV transmission line in Chongmingpower grid is made to verify some properties of this SFCL. Its propertiessuch as obvious limiting effect, timely quench recovery, good cooperation with the line’s relay protection and reclosing were proved by the simulation.
