Along with application of IEC61850standard and rapid development of digitalsubstation technology, the problem of relay protection configuration of digital substationbecomes increasingly outstanding. Hardware construction, configuration schemes andimplementation way of digital protection have changed obviously. Data platform of thestation uniform and application of GOOSE communication technology provide probility forreal time sharing of digital data. The function of protection is expanded. Many functionssuch as measurement, Wave recorder, Switch state monitoring etc that relied on traditionalequipment formerly can be implemented inner protection nowadays. Two solutions alwaysbe applied for digitization on relay protection for substation: conventional protectivesolution and new system protective solution. For conventional solution, equipment beapplied based on machine required,without consideration of changes on logical theory. Andthe operators are more familiar with conventional and more easily for the completion oftransition for relay protection. Application of system protective adopts both conventionalprotective solution and new system protective solution applied, so as to ensure the systemcan be tested completely. Application of system protective solution is an innovation. Withoperation of two system on one set of equipment,more easily operation be obtainable.System protective solution provides the direction for future development.Firstly importance of the topic and research situation at home and abroad, recentdevelopment of relay protection of digital substation are introduced in the paper. Secondlydigital substation technology and developmental stage, substation relay protectiontechnology and the influence which digital transformer substation brings for relayprotection are explained. Thirdly structural features of digital protection and relayprotection configuration schemes of digital substation are studied. Finally one500kVsubstation, for example, details the use of conventional digital substation protection schemebased.
