Wide area measurement system(WAMS) is one of three frontiers(FACTS、ITE WAMS) in power system. WAMS is based on synchronous vector measurement technology and modern communication technology. It can realize the real-time monitoring of large area of the power grid. Uploading cycle of the data tansfered by WAMS is shorer. The amount of the data is comparativelylarge. So a new chanllenge prensents for data transmission network of power system. Because data transmission of WAMS is larger, therefore data compression algorithm can be used in WAMS. The main compression algorithms in application of power system are Huffman coding and dictionary coding (LZ). LZW algorithm is improved and extended from dictionary coding. Because compressed time of LZW algorithm is shorter, and the compression efficiency is higher, so LZW algorithm has been widely applied in data processing. Multi-mode and self-adaptive LZW algorithm is improved by LZW algorithm. Through the analysis, this algorithm can adapt to the characteristics of WAMS. This paper elaborates implementation procedure of multi-mode and self-adaptive LZW algorithm in WAMS. Then this algorithm is used to compress the data of WAMS. This algorithm can meet the real-time requirement of WAMS through the test. The compression efficiency of the algorithm is obviously superior to basic LZW algorithm through the contrast. It has a broad prospect of application.in WAMS. In order to improve real time of WAMS, a communication platform combined with modern communications technology has been designed for WAMS in this paper. This platform lights wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technique as the foundation, the optical fiber as physical medium, IP over WDM as the way of net organization. It can make full use of optical fiber bandwidth and improve the communication system transmission capacity to use WDM technology. Using all optical networks, the data transmission in the process does not require electro-optical and optical-electro converter which can reduce the delay of the communication network.
