With the development of power industry, controllable reactor is widelyapplied to reactive power compensation, overvoltage limited, power qualityimprovement and other aspects. Trend of the controllable reactor are high votage,large capacity, inductance continuous controllable and low harmonic. In order tosolve the problems of conventional controllable reactor during the operating,such as high harmonic content, low load capacity, the research work aboutorthogonal magnetization controllable reactor was carried out in this paper.Orthogonal magnetization controllable reactor was excited by AC current and DCcurrent, and it produced orthogonal magnetic field.With the change of the controlcurrent, the permeability was changed as well, then the change of permeabilityleads to the change of the inductance. Orthogonal magnetization controllablereactor has the advantages of continuously controllable inductance, and lowharmonic currents.Firstly, this paper briefly introduced the controllable reactor status anddevelopment prospects, and pointed out the orthogonal magnetizationcontrollable reactor relative to the other controllable reactor.And the structure oforthogonal magnetization controllable reactor was introduced, magnetizationmechanism of orthogonal magnetization controllable reactor was discussed;mathematical model and magnetic equivalent circuit were established andderived the harmonic characteristic.Secondly, the design and calculation formula of the orthogonalmagnetization controllable reactor was given in detail. It contains the calculationof control current winding and iron, and the work current winding and iron,control current, inductance and loss calculation. On basis of the above research, asmall capacity orthogonal magnetization controllable reactor was designed, which was simulated and analyzed by the method of three dimension finiteelement. Then the design proposal was improved.Finally, the small capacity orthogonal magnetization controllable reactorwas made up, and the experiment system was set up. Physical parameters,controlling characteristics, volt-ampere characteristics and harmoniccharacteristic of the reactor were measured and analyzed through the experiment.The results show that the practical inductance of the reactor is approximatelyequal to the theoretical one, which certified that the design method is reasonable.The results also show that the orthogonal magnetization controllable reactor hasthe advantages of continuously controllable inductance, approximately linearvolt-ampere characteristics and low harmonic currents.
