Controlled reactors are reactive power compensation device which the inductance can be changed. It is widely used in the modern power gird of ultra-high pressure and ultra-high voltage circuit. With the increasing level of power grid and the increasing of power grid, power quality has been paid more and more attention. Therefore, the performance of the reactors is becoming more and more important.First of all, this paper has introduced the theoretical research of the reactor, the process of the physical design and development of the reactors. The advantages and disadvantages of several controllable reactor are introduced and compared in this paper. Maxwell equations, boundary conditions and numerical analysis principles of electromagnetic fields have been described in detail. the variable during the derivation of the variational principle and Euler equation have also been described in detail in this paper. After that, the basic principle of engineering electromagnetic field and the basic principle of finite element and their calculation method have been introduced in this paper.And then, this paper based on the electromagnetic theory and previous research proposed. A novel orthogonal magnetic controlled reactor has been proposed in this paper. Its working principle, basic structure and the field circuit coupled mathematical model have been introduced in detail in this paper. An orthogonal magnetic controlled reactor model has been designed on the basis of the three-dimensional volume of the iron core according to the relevant knowledge. And the simulations have been in the three-dimensional finite element electromagnetic field simulation software Magnet. In order to improve the accuracy of the simulation results, different DC excitation power core material with ferromagnetic properties were measured. All the different B-H curves have been used in the simulation, because the magnetization curve of the core material in power is not simply the orthogonal vector superposition. The work characteristics and control characteristics of the novel controllable reactor under different AC and DC excitation power supply have been calculated, and the design scheme has been verified.Finally, a new type of controllable reactor has been produced according to the design parameters. And the harmonic characteristics, volt ampere characteristics and control characteristics of the prototype have been measured accurately. Simulation results and prototype measurement data comparison results show that the design theory of design data and the measured data have the same change trend. So the rationality of the design scheme has been verified. At the same time, the results also show that the reactor inductance can be continuously adjusted and the harmonics content is low.
