The permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) has many advantages such as high speed, high accelerator, high precision and so on, which is suitable to the high-speed digital machine tools. It is paid great attention to by many researchers of different countries. In recent years, although there are a lot of achievements after many years researches in China, there still exists a gap compared to developed countries of USA, Germany, Japan etc. due to late starting. Therefore, the research on PMLSM has theoretical significance and use value. This thesis introduces the basic theory and the key design points of PMLSM. Based on the finite-element analysis (FEA) models, the effect of structure style, slot/pole number combination and winding type on thrust force performance is investigated. According to the above analysis, a double-sided, water-cooled PMLSM is proposed, and the effective depression method of thrust ripple is proposed. By investigating the effect of structure parameters on thrust force performance, the prototype,1000N, is designed and manufactured. The test platform design is also completed. The main conclusions of this thesis are obtained as follows:1) The number of slots and poles with a discrepancy of both one and two is suitable for PMLSM;2) To slot/pole combination12/11and12/10, the double-sided, flat PMLSM with all-teeth wound winding has better thrust force performance than that with alternative-teeth wound winding;3) To double-sided PMLSM, an effective method to depress thrust ripple is proposed by shifting the magnets or armature laminations on both sides a small distance.
