The vortex tube is an effective energy separation device which is simple in structure, low in cost, convenient in operation and has no moving parts. It can separate a high pressure gas into two fluids with distinctly different temperatures, hot and cold At present, vortex tube has been widely used in small refrigeration devices, gas mixture separation, cooling of electronic components, traditional refrigeration hypothermic circulatory and so on. However, little research has been done regarding the influence of working gases, especially HFCs, on energy separation in vortex tubes. The methods of experiment and numerical simulation have been used to study the coupling characteristics between vortex tube and refrigerants in this thesis. Main contents are as follows:1. The existing research results of vortex tube have been systematically summarized. Based on this, the working contents and research significance of this paper are determined.2. The performance testing experimental setup for gaseous medium working in a vortex tube has been built. In the experiment, R728, R744, R32, R22, R161, R134a were selected as working fluids. The performance of the vortex tube for cooling, heating, and energy separation with different working fluids in different inlet pressure were tested and analyzed.3. The experimental setup was modified for liquid medium working in the vortex tube. In the experiment, R134a were selected as working fluids. The basic operational characteristics of R134a working in the closed system were studied, and the performance of the vortex tube for energy separation were tested and analyzed.4. Based on previous experimental data, a numerical simulation of the the velocity, temperature and pressure distributions of the internal flow inside a vortex tube has been done for observing and analyzing the flow and heat transfer inside the vortex tube.
