Beam string structure (BSS), comprised of rigidity bending arch, flexible cable andpoles, is a structure that support outer load by tensioning the cables. This kind ofstructure is simple, light, stiffness, stable, beautiful and is very popular amongdesigners. In recent20years, BSS has been widely used in the large span spacestructure.This paper summarizes the classifications and characteristics of the existing BSS,and illustrates the widely usage of BSS in China and other countries. This paper alsosummarizes the existing studies of BSS, and mentions the meaning of stability of BSS.Mechanical characteristic, analysis method and the model is expounds in four parts:mechanical characteristics, analysis method, nonlinear analysis and the simulation ofBSS.The analysis of BSS’s stability is the main goal of this paper. In this paper, thestability of BSS is divided into overall stability and local stability, while the overallstability is also divided into stabilities inside and outside the plane. The outside planestability is also divided by whether lateral support or not. This paper provides theformula of critical load of symmetric and anti-symmetric structures, and calculatestheir stability by initial parameter method. This paper also provides the formula ofpole’s stability by the standard.This paper builds a120m-span single hinged space truss BSS by SAP2000andanalyses different influences of BSS’s mechanical behavior by the prestress load,rise-span ratios, high-span ratios and the number of poles in BSS. This papersummarizes the rules of displacement and internal force by analyzing different datacalculated above and provides some reasonable design parameter. After changingmodel, this paper analyses the stability of the model and compared with the resultscalculated by ANSYS.
