Length metrology is an important composition of modern metering technology. Therequirement for length metrology is increasing with the rapid development of Chinese modernmanufacturing industry. As the important physical standards of length, block gauge is alsorequired to increase its measurement accuracy. According to the the measuring requirement, itis necessary to develop a set of high performance and automatic measuring device ofhigh-grade block gauge.In this work, the importance of block gauge was firstly investigated in the transfer oflength measuring value and quality assurance system of industrial production, as well asdomestic and foreign present situation of test methods of high-grade block gauge. Based onthe principles of application of light interference, two measuring methods between the Exactfraction method and Interferometer Fringe Counting Method of high-grade block gauge werecompared. And an automatic measuring device of class3block gauge was developed by usinginterference fringe counting method combined with data acquisition and processingtechnology of computer. The hardware components of device included designs of optical,circuit and environmental parameters p, t, f measurement system, and the software componentsincluded designs of interference signal subdivision program and measurement control software,as well as estimation of effects of software subdivision algorithm on error by mathematicalsimulation approach.In data analysis section, measurement system analysis (MSA) theory was applied, and6of variation sources of order2block gauge composed by contact laser interferometer wereanalyzed one by one, including stability, bias, linearity, repeatability, reproducibility and R&Rof measuring system, and then measuring ability of system was evaluated according toanalysis results. Finally, the research results were summarized and the defects of device andthoughts of improvements were elaborated in this work.
