This paper proposes a method to establish a complete analytical model for power system fault diagnosis from the configuration document information of the power network based on IEC61850/61970. First, the current methods of power network fault diagnosis and their merits and demerits are discussed, and considering the problems existing in the on-line application of the available analytical models, a new method of fault diagnosis based on a complete analytical model is explored. Second, the modeling principle and several tough problems of establishing the complete analytical model online are investigated. According to the data information needed to build the complete analytical model, the IEC61850/61970standard, the power network topology and the protection configuration information are studied in details, and the descriptive procedure of the information in the configuration files as well as the ways to get the information through analyzing the configuration files are also investigated. The specific modeling research and the steps to realize the data analyzing of configuration files are shown on a test case and based on the information analyzed from the files, the complete analytical model can be formed automatically. After that, the computer program of establishing the complete analytical model using information from standard configuration files based on IEC61850/61970is developed. The program consists of three modules—cquiring and storing of the modeling information through analyzing the configuration files, determination of the outage areas by network topology analysis where the suspicious fault component sets and acted breaker sets in the outage areas are defined as output with the alarming information of the breakers as input, and automatic establishment of the complete analytical model based on the protection configuration information, the related information between protection and tripping of the breakers as well as the outage area information. Finally, the modeling results of a testing case demonstrate the correctness of the complete analytical model established in the case and the validity of the proposed modeling method in this paper.
