The development of manufacture is seriously limited by the vibration occurs duringcutting. So the study of vibration attenuation for cutting is becoming a challenging subject.Particle damper is a recent developed passive method for reducing vibration. Comparedwith other methods, it is not necessary to change much on structures by it, and its frequencyband for vibrating reduction is wide. Meanwhile, it can be applied in very bad environmentsuch as high pressure and temperature. With these advantages, its application should bepromising. This dissertation studied the basic property and dissipating mechanism of particledamper at first, then this method was applied to the anti-vibration of boring bar, and theeffectiveness of particle damper was tested on real cutting experiment. The main content is asfollows:1.A short introduction for the situation of anti-vibration methods and particles presenthome and abroad is given at the beginning, with the summary of advantages and disadvantagefor their performances, the urgency for developing anti-vibration tools and the feasibility ofparticle dampers were expounded.2.The various vibrations that will occur during cutting were studied, of which the initialoccurrence and methods for suppression of regenerative chatter were emphasized. With thestudy, the steady limit cutting width at low-speed was modified. Then an anti-vibration boringbar was designed by the principle of big cavity but small loss on static stiffness. The intensitycheck, analysis on natural modal and frequency response of the new boring bar were given, itproved the parameters chosen were applicable.3.The meaning of all parameters and the principles of DEM were studied in detail, thecontact property was analyzed by employing contact mechanics, the influence of van derWaals force to the particles was considered, and then the model of the particle wasimproved.4.The performance of the particles as a whole was studied from macro perspective with the use of powder mechanics. The influence of filling height, length of cavity andslenderness ratio to the performance of the particles were considered after the distribution ofthe stress between each particles’ layers was calculated. Then impact between the particleswere simplified to perfect plastic collision, with this the trace of the particles in thecontainer was studied, and the energy consumption in collisions were analyzed quantitively.5. A real cutting experiment was designed to test the effects of the particles, with theanalysis of power spectrum the filling ratio, size and material of particles were studied. Finally, some advices for designing the particle absorber were given.
