By taking advantage of the advanced combustion organization, the trapped vortex combustor (TVC) achieves the following targets including ignition performance, high combustion efficiency and low pollution emissions, while TVC also has the characteristics of being simple structure and light weight. TVC has already gradually become the typical combustion chamber which is able to match up the advanced future engine.The central-bluff-body TVC sets two bluff bodies in the flow passage, generating trapped vortex cavity with two bluff bodies and wall surrounded. As a component of a ramgen engine, the central-bluff-body TVC works at the condition of high pressure and velocity produced by the ramjet rotor. The characteristics of the combustor such as combustion stability, efficiency, fuel adaptability, and emission control are in urgent need of research.Using the ways of experimental measurement, this paper researches on performance of central-bluff-body TVC with three different fore-body head shape, and obtains detailed data including total pressure on the outlet, total pressure on the trapped vortex cavity, static pressure on the shroud of trapped vortex cavity and burnout area, static pressure on the surface of the fore-body and back-body, and oil flow spectrum on the shroud of TVC. It is shown that the optimum characteristic could be gained from the TVC which has a round-head fore-body, be followed by von Karman curve head, and pentahedral-head bluff body is the worst.Meanwhile, for all conditions of the experimental measurements, the paper carries out numerical simulation making use of Fluent. Comparing the simulation results with the experimental results in the total pressure loss coefficient and the end wall pressure distribution of the combustor outlet, the paper verifies the important role of qualitative analysis, that numerical simulation has in the research on the central-bluff-body TVC. The paper also makes a certain amount of research on the vortex distribution in the TVC.
