The motorcycle industry is challenged by the problems such as energy shortage and environmental pollution, but which also brought new development opportunities. On the background of energy conservation and emission reduction, hybrid power and brake energy recovery technology is one of the technical solutions to solve the problems, which the motorcycle industry faced, such as environmental pollution and energy loss and so on. This paper designed a hybrid motorcycle brake energy recovery system. The main idea is to convert part of vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity energy which is stored in batteries when the hybrid motorcycle needs deceleration or braking. During this period, a braking torque is emerged to make the motorcycle decelerating or braking.This paper makes a research about brake energy recovery technology which is based on a hybrid motorcycle that modified from a three-wheeled motorcycle. The main contents include the analysis of three-wheeled motorcycle power structure and hybrid technology transfer methods, the reasonable layout of hybrid motorcycle power system (gasoline engine system, motor system), the dynamic component selection and dynamic matching analysis so on. Forces on the front and rear wheels and characteristics of brushless DC motor mechanical braking torque and electromagnetic braking torque are analyzed. Then the control strategy of braking energy recovery is detailedly studied basing on these analyses. According to corresponding control strategy, hardware and software systems are designed. The hardware part consists of control chip, signal acquisition circuit and electromagnetic braking system circuit. Electromagnetic brake system circuit mainly includes rectifier and filter circuit, boost circuit, charging circuit and electrical energy circuit, which realized functions that inputting5V-45V voltage and outputting a constant voltage. Software design includes main program, braking mode subprogram, regenerative braking torque calculation subprogram, and braking torque distribution program. According to the design of brake energy recovery controller, some experiments are also carried out.The experimental results show that the hybrid motorcycle installed brake energy recovery system can correctly judge and determine the appropriate brake mode for energy recovery according to the control strategy with an energy recovery rate around6%~10%. The boost circuit can boost the voltage range of the generator from6V~43V to the necessary voltage. On different conditions, during motorcycle brake energy recovery process, it has such following advantages as simple operation, stable driving and excellent security. The hybrid motorcycle equipped with a brake energy recovery system has many advantages such as low fuel consumption, less harmful exhaust emission and carbon dioxide emission, better dynamic performance and endurance.
