Pipeline transportation is playing an increasingly important role in contemporary transport systems. The capacities of traffic volume and transport types are gradually obtaining the recognition for its importance. The main material employs by constructors is metal. The breakthroughs of the new non-welded skills of metal pipe connection technology are urgently needed in civil and urban planning, energy development and water delivery fields. This thesis provides a bi-directional hinged design of flexible pipe joints. This design is based on metal material elasticity and shell theory which provides the mechanical analysis method. And then, the mechanical properties and mechanical strength analysis will proceed in further study. On the basis of assumed working conditions and technical requirements, the structural design of the bi-directional hinged flexible pipe joints and associated connecting pipe is conceived by means of the technology of solid elasticity and shell mechanics. Mechanical properties and the loads were studied based on the theory of mechanics shell. Calculations of the various load value and strength check were engaged on the following research.By means of the finite element analysis software, approximation and simplification of the actual conditions of the pipe joints are structured. Through simulation of a simplified model, its mechanical properties such as the connection of the required preload force and failure stress are obtained. Analytical expressions of the above parameters derived. These all provide a strong guarantee for improving the structural design. By means of Pro/e, AutoCAD and other two-dimensional and three-dimensional modeling software, the establishment of a solid model was actualized. Using general-use finite element analysis software ABAQUS, the establishment of three-dimensional and ax symmetric model could provide partial perspective for pipe joints at different pressure conditions, stress and displacement. These parameters are all important for the study. Further analysis of aggregated data for mechanical strength and propose optimizations are carried forward.Through the bi-directional hinge joints flexible pipe research, the designs for seal department are paved in future research and practical application.
