Automatic Train Control (ATC) system of Urban Rail Transit consists of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) system. ATP system meets the principal of fail-safe and ensures train safety with functions such as safe train separation control, overspeed protection and door control. ATO system performs functions of speed regulation, programmed stopping, door control performance level regulation, or other inessential functions by the train operator. ATS system is a management system of ATC system and is responsible for supervision and control of all operating trains.In recent years, with the promotion and application of CBTC in our country, higher requirements have been put forward for ATS system. CBTC system is a moving block with characteristics of train location determination independent of track circuits and continuous bidirectional train-to-wayside data communications. In CBTC system, when wireless communication fails, communication trains degrade to non-communication trains. Under such circumstance, ATS system can’t continue tracking trains due to the loss of specific train location information and can’t get accurate train location which will affect the real-time monitoring of operating trains.Therefore, the research of the continuity of ATS system on train tracking in degraded back-up mode, not only can ensure the completion of functions like automatic train routing and train operation regulation, but also improve ATS system service performance.Based on project "Intelligent Train Monitoring System", with ATS train tracking as research target, the paper improves train tracking in CBTC back-up mode and proposes virtual train tracking for non-communication trains. ATS system will locate the train location in axle counter section and then estimate its specific location in the section. That is, ATS system firstly gets signal devices status via interlocking and logically determines the track or axle counter section occupied by the train to get the tracking location of train identification. Then, according to the tracking interval calculation method in quasi-moving block, ATS system will further refine the location of virtual train and realize the continuous train tracking in back-up mode.Through ATS simulation platform, cooperation of train analog subsystem and interlocking analog subsystem and application of practical line data, the paper realizes the simulation of ATS train tracking functions such as train identification, train number operation and train number tracking. Also, it realizes the continuous tracking of virtual train’s location. At the same time, via simulation, the paper verifies the importance of train tracking on automatic train routing and automatic regulation, and continuous and real-time train tracking function is proved to be an important guarantee for the realization of supervision and control of operating trains.
