Mei (prunus mume) bonsai is one of the Chinese classic artistic styles, but its market share is decreasing in modern flower industry. Understanding the customers’preference of Mei Bonsai and applying soilless culture production technology will significantly promote the development of this industry. Thus, we carried out present research on Mei flower bonsai demand and market supply, Mei flower styles,as well as test of soilless culture. The main conclusion and suggestions are as follows:A. Several main bonsai gardens and companies of Mei flower Bonsai were investigated in terms of the status of production and sale, several key factors for blocking further development of Mei Bonsai were found out. Thus we proposed six novelty approaches to promote its reform and innovation, such as characterized creation of Mei Pile and self-improvement of employee etc.B. Interviewees’consumption willings on flower color of Mei, bonsai sizes and styles, and after-sale service varied in different ages, incomes, careers and education background via questionnaire survey. Five of the most popular Bonsai styles were screened. Mini Bonsai market should be developed rapidly, and reasonable prices and after-sale service are very important to sustainable development of Mei Bonsai industry.C. The conclusion of soilless culture experiment is that the most suitable cultivation matrix is:peat, vermiculite, perlite=1:1:1(Volumetric mixture), and1/2and1/4Japanese garden beta formulas are optimum nutrient solutions for Prunus mume ’Kouban Dahong’ and P. mume ’Meiren’, respectively, which both were cultivated with the most suitable complex substrate. Finally, We summarized the technologies of watering, fertilizing, trimming and pest control for the soilless culture of Mei Bonsai.
