Hydrangea is an important ornamental plant in the south of Yangtze River. In this expriment, two species of H. macrophylla ’Coerulea’,Mosaic variant and silver hydrangea, were used as materials for the study of biological characteristics. The main results were described as follows:1. Comparation of plant morphology in leaf. The results of the comparation showed that floral area in the Mosaic variant and Silver hydrangea’s leaf was up to79.29%and16.69%respectively, and chloroplast ultrastructure in different part had a significanct difference that chloroplast in green part of the leaf is well developed but in floral part is abnormal even malformed developed.2. Comparation of physiologic condition. Ordered from higher to lower, the comparation in photosynthetic rate is H. macrophylla’Coerulea’, Silver Hydrangea and Mosaic variant;in contents of soluble sugar is H. macrophylla ’Coerulea’,Silver Hydrangea and Mosaic variant;in contents of chlorophyll is H. macrophylla.’Coerulea’,Silver Hydrangea and Mosaic variant, and in contents of carotenoid is Mosaic variant, Silver Hydrangea and H. macrophylla ’Coerulea’.3. Analysis of genetic differences based on SRAP. The genomic DNA of H. macrophylla ’Coerulea’ and its mosaic variant was PCR amplificated with three high-distinguished random primers, and seven different bands were showed in polyacrylamide gel which contained PCR products.4. Detection for genetic stability of silver hydrangea and mosaic variant of H. macrophylla’Coerulea’.The results showed those two species maintained genetic stability. In summary, the biological characteristic of those three species were different, especially between H. macrophylla ’Coeruled’ and its Mosaic variant. Moreover, the variation, yellow-white mosaic, was identified as a result of mutation of H. macrophylla ’Coerulea’,and the character of this variation could be propagated by cutting propagation. Therefore, the Mosaic variant of H. macrophylla’Coerulea’ could be applied in landscaping as a new species.
