Effects Of Removing Lateral Buds And Spraying Calcium On Qualities Of Peony Cut Flowers

At the present time,Chinese peony cut flower industries are developing in the initialstage.There are few of researches about preharvest treatment of peony.The main purpose of thisstudy paper is to study the effects of spraying calcium and removing buds respectively on thequality of peony cut flowers. Varieties of ‘Taohua Feixue’,‘Yangfei Chuyu’ and‘Chun Xiao’are chosen as experiment materials. In the experiment of removing buds,lateral buds areremoved when the size of the main buds reached at1.5cm,2cm and2.5cm. In the experiment ofspraying calcium,4%of Ca（CH₃COO）₂were sprayed on peony cut flowers respectively at aninterval of one day, intervals of two days and intervals of four days when the main budsreached at the size of1.5cm.Qualities of peony cut flowers of three varieties will be studyedthrough determining the related indexes including the thickening rate of scapes,the elongationrate of scapes, the life of peony cut flowers, the days of full opening stage,the value of waterbalance, etc. The results show that:（1）Effects of removing lateral buds on qualities of peony cut flowersRemoving lateral buds when the main buds reach at2cm can prolong the full bloom-stageof ‘Taohua Feixue’,‘Yangfei Chuyu’ and‘Chun Xiao’for half of a day,1.5days and1dayrespectively. This treasure can keep the days of full opening stage at the longest time. If thelateral buds are removed when the size of the main buds reached at1.5cm,the days offull-bloom stage will may be shortened. When the main buds reach at2cm,the treasure cankeep the diameters at maximum value of opening days of peony cut flowers for viewing andadmiring（including: early stage of opening,half blooming stage,full blooming stage）.It can also keepthe thickening rate of scapes of ‘Taohua Feixue’ and‘Chun Xiao’at the maximum value. Thetreasures of removing buds have significant effects on the elongation rate. Removing budswhen the main buds reach2cm can keep the elongation rate of every variety at the maximumvalue. Though the treasures of removing lateral buds have little effects on life of peony cutflowers.But they have significant effects on days of full opening stage,flower diameters,thethickening rate of scapes and the elongation rate of scapes.The best treasure is removing lateralbuds when the main buds reach at2cm and it can enhance the qualities of peony cut flowers.（2）Effects of spraying calcium on qualities of peony cut flowersThe treasure of spraying calcium at intervals of two days has positive effect on prolongingthe life of peony cut flowers.The treasure can prolong the life of peony cut flowers1.5days,1day and2days respectively.But the treasure of spraying calcium at an interval of oneday will change the life of peony cut can reduce the flowering phase. The treasure of sprayingcalcium at intervals of two days can prolong the life of peony cut flowers2days,1.5days and1day of days of the full-bloom stage of ‘Taohua Feixue’,‘Yangfei Chuyu’ and‘Chun Xiao’.Itcan also keep the flower diameters,the thickening rate of scapes and the elongation rate ofscapes at maximum of opening days of peony cut flowers for viewing and admiring.Butspraying calcium at an interval of one day have negtive effects on the thickening rate ofscapes and the elongation rate of scapes.The treasure of spraying calcium at intervals of two days can enhance the life of peony cutflowers,the days of full-bloom stage,the flower diameters the thickening rate of scapes and theelongation rate of scapes.But spraying calcium at an interval of one day decline the quality ofpeony cut flowers.That indicates too much calcium has negative effect on the growth of peonycut flowers and which can also decline the quality of it.
