In the process of rice growth, weeds decrease rice quality and yield. At present both herbicide and manual weed control have many shortages. Chemical weed control causes environmental pollution, reduces crop nutrition and increases weed drug resistance. Manual weed control is labor-intensive, low-efficient and bounds labor. Mechanical weed control is not only protects environment but high efficient will be an irresistible trend.In this paper, one walking weeding machine for paddy weed which can control both inter-row weeds and intra-weeds at the same time was designed and some relative questions were studied.1) Physiological characteristics of rice and weed were deeply studied. According to different structural characteristics of paddy root and weeds root and their growth period, weeding time and weeding types of inter-row weeds and intra-weeds were determined, which lay a theoretical foundation for whole weeding machine.2) According to weeding type, weeding parts for inter-row weeds and intra-weeds were designed. And principle of weeding and the reason why injury seedlings were analyzed, the relationship that how outline dimension of spring-tooth disk and working style affect weeding rate and injury seedlings rate was obtained. The force of spring-tooth in the soil was analyzed, and force and torque which soil and machine give on the spring-tooth was derived. Then, spring-tooth strength was checked using ANSYS.3) By the analysis of weeding principle, some test factors, which have significant influence to intra-row weeding rate, intra-row injury seedlings rate and inter-row weeding rate, were obtained. Test factor which had more influence, the best parameters of the test factors and mathematical models were obtained by single-factor test and orthogonal test.4) Designing the whole structural layout and selecting power chassis mechanism. And transmission mechanism was designed according to different weeding way of inter-row weeding part and intra-row weeding part.5) The whole structure and working style were optimized by the whole machine test, and the best combination of parameters was tested.Field test shows that the designed paddy weeding machine can control weeds effectively, and the whole structure is rational. The machine can meet the performance requirements of paddy field weeding. Its weeding rate is more than80%and injury seedlings rate Less than4.5%. The machine which working breadth is narrow and operation is convenient can control intra-row weeds and inter-row weeds at the same time.
