Cost-benefit Analysis Of Cultured Adult Large Yellow Croaker

Large yellow croaker, a typical marine commercial fish of China, has beensuccessfully used to culture since the late20th century. Now, cage culture of largeyellow croaker is expanding to Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong and Jiangsu etc. In2008,the total output of cultured large yellow croaker in China was about sixty-six thousandtons, with Fujian Province sixty thousand tons. Meanwhile, as the core breeding area,Ningde City produced about forty thousand tons, which was in advance of sixty-onepercent of the national output. However, along with the social and economic benefits,problems such as qulity degradation, water contamination, poor management and highrisk are also brought about by the developing culture industry.Through methods such as literature search, field research, questionnaire survey andmathematical statistics, this paper firstly explores the current situation, including culturemanner, farm scale, raising period, bait usage and culture benefit, of the cultured largeyellow croaker in Ningde of Fujian Province. Then, based on survey of twenty-six largeyellow croaker farmers in Ningde of Fujian Province, this paper analysis the coststructure and the cost-benefit level of the cultured adult large yellow croaker. Theresearch results are:(1) Feed cost amounts to seventy-three to seventy-eight percent ofthe total cost, and the unit cost has been obviously raised by rising bait price andhigher wage level;(2) To farmers of different breeding scales, the discrepancies in unitcost and cost composition are very obvious;(3) Rising amout of the selling price cannotexceed that of the cost, so benefits of farmers are less than that of earlier years;(4) Scalecultivation has no advantage in unit cost, however, large-scale company breeding hasobvious superiority in breeding benefit. Finally, in view of the research results, thispaper puts forward the following three suggestions:(1) The government shoulddevelope and further promote the artificial feeds to reduce the farming cost withscientific feeding;(2) Economic cooperation organization of medium-scale andsmall-scale farmers should be established to unify sales of the products and enhance thedevelopment strength of the market;(3) The government should set up a central platform about the industrial development, so as to boost its commercial efficiency;(4)The government should take more actions to support the leading enterprise, so as topromote the industrialization development of cultured adult large yellow croaker;(5)Large attention should be paid to environment protection to insure sustainable andhealthy development of the industry.
