Based on the current status and main challenges of maize in Northeast China andHuanghuaihai Region, the breeding objects of high yield, good quality, multi-resistanceand wide range of adaptability were established. By using the superior inbred lines andthe innovative breeding methods, an excellent maize hybrid Anyu13was cultivated. Inthe following, the details of breeding process, the most suitable cultivation, the system ofseed production techniques, together with the utilization of maize germplasm, will bediscussed.1. The origin of the female and male parent of cultivar Anyu13The female parent of Anyu13, the inbred line A28, has a strong resistance to diseases,which originated from the trapical maize germplasm through the pedigree breeding method.The male parent of Anyu13is the inbred line A3566, which combined the high yield featureof the temperate maize germplasm and the outstanding stress resistance trait of the tropicalmaize germplasm. The hybrid cultivar Anyu13was created according the heterotic patternlike Reid×Suwan×Lüda Red Cob.2. Superior traits of the maize cultivar Anyu13The results of field trails showed that Anyu13owned lots of superior traits, such as highand stable yield, strong resistance and wild adaptation. The test results of the national maizecultivar regional trials of China revealed that the average yields of Anyu13(10209kg/hm~2and11136kg/hm~2, respectively) were12.1%and14.37%higher than those of the controlcultivar Nongda108, during2003-2004. Futrhermore, this cultivar also owns a strongresistance to northern leaf blight, stalk rot, common smut, and Ostrinia furnacalis Guene, andresistance to southern leaf blight, Curvularia lunata and maize dwarf mosaic virus.3.The suitable cultivation methods and seed production techniques of Anyu13The proper planting density of Anyu13ranged from0.5~0.6×10~5plants/hm~2, and thesuitable cutivation technique was the wide alternative narrow rows. In order to get heighquality seeds, some production techniques and the planting density need to be taken intoconsideration. Both the summer maize of Huanghuaihai region and the spring maize of Northwest of China, the best sowing densities of the female and the male inbred lines arerecommned0.75×10~5and0.90×10~5plants/hm~2, and the male inbred lines are0.825×10~5and1.05×10~5plants/hm~2, respectively. The best ratio between the female and the male parent areas5:1. To obtain a high fecundity and yield, the sowing date of the first batch of the maleparent is2-day earlier than that of the female parent, and the second batch is the same daywith it.
