Selective Breeding And High-yielding Cultural Techniques Of Maize Cultivar Zhouyu No.1

A new combination Zhouyu No.1 (S26 x E538) for ordinary feeding was bred by using the parents consecutive selection and the pattern of heterotic group. After the provincial level regional test(2005-2006), production test (2006)and demonstration of cultivation(2006), Zhouyu No.l reached the breeding objective in the results of yield, quality and resistance. Zhouyu No.1 was a new maize hybrid cultivar which has been released by the Crop Cultivated Variety Approval Committee of Hunan Province in 2007. This article mainly studied the selective breeding, ecological adaptability and cultural technique of Zhouyu No.1. This paper also discussed the maize breeding objective of Hunan provinceThe main results were as follows:1. The results of the breeding and all the experiment of Zhouyu No.1 indicated that it exists both covering high yield, good quality, the good agronomic character, being many kinds of resistance and high yield of hybrid seed production.2. According to the maize breeding goal, selecting inbred lines for parents is especially important. The selecting content of S26 as the female parent of Zhouyu No.1, was the direct choice with thick cob, many cob lines and high bulk specific gravity grain. As the male parent, E538 faces the direct choice with long cob, high forming grains rate and good resistances. Zhouyu No.1 has gathered the parents' characters, realize advantage complementary.3. Zhouyu No.1 performed high and stable yield. The average yield of Zhouyu No.1 in the maize regional experiment of Hunan Province in 2005～2006 was 8082.0 kg/ hectare with a 11.38% increase compared with Nongda 108 (as a comparison).4. The quality of Zhouyu No.1 was examined by the Test Center of Crop's Quality Determination of the Ministry of Agriculture. The content of quality included its bulk specific gravity grain(750 g/L), its original protein content(13.30%), its original starch content(68.19%), its lysine content (0.30%) and its original fat content(3.79%).5. The comprehensive resistance of Zhouyu No.1 is good, according to resistance test, it's high resistance to corn leaf blight, southern leaf blight of corn and corn stalk rot, medium resistance to corn sheath blight, corn borer。the lodging and stem broken problem of Zhouyu No.1 is not serious。6. The cultivation experiment showed that the cultivation measure for over 8250 kg/hectare of Zhouyu No.1 is:planting density 28381～52140/hectare, urea 135～271.5kg/ hectare in seedling stage, urea 276.0～351.0 kg/hectare as panicle fertilizer, calcium superphosphate 324.0～468.0 kg/hectare and KCl 147.75～177.0 kg/hectare as base fertilizer.
