Carpenter moths (Lepidoptera:Cossidae) are relatively small but economically important family of moths. However, many species are difficulty to distinguish based on morphological characteristics. In this study, the sequences of CO â…  was determined from8genus14species of carpenter moths to develop the first barcodes for Cossidae and evaluate their utility for diagnostic purpose. Our study supports the general utility of CO I barcodes for distinguishing and diagnosing Cossidae species. The phylogenetic tree can well resolvedeach generabased on COâ… gene segment. Furthermore, we used multiply mtDNA fragments to discuss the evolutionary relationship between Holcocerus hippophaecolus and H. vicarious. The result showed the genetic differentiation in these two sibling species was on the intra-specific level. Our results establish a foundation for further barcode-based species identification and help to better understand the phylogenic relationship in this family.
