AIMTo investigate the symptomatic characteristics in patients with irritable bowelsyndrome(IBS) in Fujian province in order to provide a guidance for the diagnosisand treatment of IBS.METHODSA total of703IBS out-patients based on the RomeⅢcriteria, which presented tothe gastroenterological clinic of9third-level hospitals in Fujian Province, wereenrolled in this questionnaires.RESULTS1. In these703patients, the ratio of male to female was1:1.3. The average agewas43.02±13.17years old and the peak of the age was35~45years old.58.2%ofIBS was IBS-D, and.10.4%had the familial IBS patients.2. Compared to IBS-C patients, the abdominal pain scores were higher in IBS-Dand IBS-M patients (p<0.05). However, the abdominal distention scores in IBS-Cpatients were higher than in IBS-D patients (p<0.05). The mucous stool scores inIBS-C patients were the lowest and the unfinished defecating feeling scores in IBS-Upatients were the highest respectively (p<0.05). There was no significant difference inthe lower GI symptom scores between the both genders (p>0.05).3. About one third of IBS patients overlapped the upper GI symptoms, and themost common GI symptoms were postprandial fullness and eructation. Sixty-eight(9.7%) patients overlapped FD, whose abdominal distention scores were higher thanthose in IBS patients who didn’t overlap FD.4. The IBS patients had different degrees of sleep-disorder(46.99%), badmood(35.39%),work-affecting(18.08%), life-affecting(27.20%),more aches(7.26%).5. About three-quarter of IBS patients had some predisposing factors, includingover-work, catching cold, tension, poor sleep, drinking and some certain food. The symptoms were more serious during the menstrual period in about a quarter of femaleIBS patients.CONCLUSION:The symptomatic characteristics of IBS patients in gastroenterological clinics ofthe third-level hospitals in Fujian province were as follows:(1)In these IBS patientsthe ratio of male to female was1:1.3.
