Cinnamon oil extracted from cinnamon had been found the therapeutic effects onasthma, depressurization, analgesia, acute diarrhea, diabetes and obesity. Among them, diabetes and obesity have a close relationship with gut microflora according toliteratures. Cinnamon oil is one of the main functional components in cinnamon; theimpact of cinnamon oil on gut microflora was investigated in order to help discoverthe functional mechanism of cinnamon on diabetes and obesity. In the research, the effect of cinnamon oil on some specific intestinal bacteria inSD rats was observed by cultivation in vitro and the method of terminal restrictionfragment length polymorphism (TRFLLP); the bacteriostatic effect of cinnamon oilfermented or not by Lactobacilli in vitro was investigated by disc diffusion method. The results are as followed:(1) Only Lactobacilli was absolutely predominant species, and the others can notnearly survive in the media with cinnamon oil.(2) The bacterial population, diversity and distribution of Clostridia cluster IVand Bacteroides significantly declined due to the intake of cinnamon oil, especiallyfor Clostridia cluster IV.(3)Under the concentration of10,15and20μL/mL, cinnamon oil has asignificant bacteriostatic activity and cinnamon oil after fermented by Lactobacilli invitro has no obvious difference about the bacteriostatic activity.
