Objective:To study the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and pregnancy complications and pregnancy outcomes.Methods:A total of 717 patients were recruited in the period of January 2009 to December 2010. BMI, pregnancy complications and pregnancy outcomes were recorded and analyzed.Results:The pregnancy complications (pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome and gestational diabetes mellitus) greatly increased in the group of a BMI>25kg/m2 (P<0.05) compared with the other two groups. The abnormal pregnancy outcomes (macrosomia, premature infants, postpartum hemorrhage) were also significantly elevated in the group of a BMI>25kg/m2 (P<0.05).Conclusion:The highpregnancy BMI and increased range of BMI during pregnancy can increase the risk pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome and gestational diabetes mellitus. To prevent to pregnancy complications and improve pregnancy outcomes, it is necessary to enhance health education,control body weight during pregnancy, and recommend reasonable nutrition during pregnancy.
