Articular cartilage plays a very import role in the whole joint . It is one of the decisivefactors which makes the joint possess a smaller friction and other unique dampingperformance outstanding . However, due to the particular location and function of articularcartilage in biology, the occurrence of injuries is common. And the regeneration capacity ofcartilage is limited, once injuried, regeneration is very difficult. Therefore, in-depthunderstanding of the mechanism of cartilage damage, determine the evolution of mechanismscould provide effective reference for cartilage repair. The main subject from two aspects tostudy the mechanical properties of cartilage , one part is numerical simulation and the other isexperimental study . The simulation part mainly use large-scale analysis software ANSYS10.0to establish cartilage model, kill some elements through the options of element birth/death , tosimulate the absence injury of cartilage , analysis the force and strain of cartilage damage by10% of compression conditions. Experimental part we choose pig femoral head cartilage to doone-dimensional compression test in order to study the force and strain in different layers ofcartilage damage, and to compare the different damage depth.Objective From numerical simulation and experimental study to understand themechanical properties of cartilage damage, which will provide a reference for cartilage repairand the replacement of cartilage in clinical application must reach the appropriate structureand function can repair cartilage defects effective ly.Methods Establish cartilage section model using large-scale analysis softwareANSYS10.0, bottom-up modeling approach, the line is generated by the points ,and thesurface is generated by the lines, the model takes into account of the presence of fibers,displacement load is imposed on the cartilage section. Simulate cartilage damage by killingsome element, binding the active node, remove dead element displacement loads, constraintall the freedom of deep cartilage, to solve the calculation. Simulation and experimental resultswere compared and come to a conclusion.Results and discussion Simulation results show that the cartilage damage suffered stressand strain is large, and the greater the damage zone is, the bigger the maximum stress andstrain is. The maximum value of stress and strain mainly concentrated in the vicinity damagearea . From the experimental results in the scatter line chart also shows consistent results.Thatcan explain, cartilage damage will cause the surrounding cartilage tissue degeneration,making the damage increase, so cartilage damage need to be repaired.
