Aim and objectives:This study aims to explore the perceptions of continuing care in general practice by both providers and patients in general hospital with the following objectives:-To describe the understanding of definition of continuing care by both providers and patients.-To identify the perceived factors which encourage or prevent patients from accessing continuing care in general practice.-To understand the ideal continuing care services in general practice and services providers the patients want.-To develop appropriate recommendations to increase the acceptance and usage of continuing care in general practice.Methodology:This study employed qualitative methods to achieve the aim and objectives. Information-rich participants (providers, users and non-users) were purposely selected and recruited in this research. In-depth interviews were utilized for collecting the three group participants’views and opinions. All the interview recordings were transcribed and imported into MAXQDA10for analysis.Research outcomes:The findings of qualitative data explored the perceptions of continuing care in general practice from8providers,2users and4non-users which identified the following themes:-Understandings on the definition of continuing care.-Effects of continuing care (positive effects and negative effects)-Factors influencing continuing care usage behavior (encouraging factors and preventing factors)-Ideal continuing care services in general practice and services providersConclusions:This study is the first research in China which explored the perceptions of continuing care in general practice by both providers and patients in general hospital. The rich information from providers, users and non-users offer us a general picture of the relationship between providers and patients’perceptions of continuing care and their behavior, supplying us the evidences of developing the continuing care system in general practice in China.
