Objective:To evaluate the safety and the imaging and pathologic characteristics of the ablation effect of low concentration sodium hydroxide in a rabbit VX2liver tumor model, and to provide experimental evidence for clinical use of low concentration sodium hydroxide.Method:1.Low concentration sodium hydroxide was made by experiment of different concentrations and dosage of sodium hydroxide injections in normal pork liver invitro.2.A pilot study of2.5%concentration sodium hydroxide in normal rabbit liver was done to observe the changes in imaging, pathology and biochemistry.3.A rabbit VX2liver tumor model was made by direct injection of transplant tumor.4.A case-control study was carried out to compare the ablation effect of2.5%sodium hydroxide and absolute ethyl alcohol in the rabbit VX2liver tumor model.Result:1.Compared with absolute ethyl alcohol, larger ablation area was caused by2.5%sodium hydroxide. 2.Group1:the levels of venous blood routine test, liver function and renal function recovered two weeks after the operation.Group2:Liquefactive necrosis was the featured pathologic change.3.CT display rate was low on the7th day after transplantation of animal tumor; while100display rate were observed after14days.4.More ablation of liver necrosis was observed in the sodium hydroxide group (p<0.05) in the rabbit VX2liver tumor model group.Conclusion:1.Comparing with absolute ethyl alcohol,2.5%sodium hydroxide is more effective in cell inactivation when injected to the rabbit liver in a low dosage.2.Small doses of low concentration of sodium hydroxide injection are safe for healthy rabbits with a complete ablation of liver necrosis.3.The rabbit VX2liver tumor model established by injection is simple but with a high success rate, which should be popularized.4.2.5%sodium hydroxide is more effective in cell inactivation when injected to the rabbit liver with the same dosage as absolute ethyl alcohol.Low concentration of sodium hydroxide is an alternative chemical ablation agent for liver cancer, when percutaneously injected; a complete ablation will be achieved with more safety and less side effect, which will be a new treatment for liver cancer.
